Re: Police

John - thanks for emailing me back!!!

I really appreciate it.

Good interview on the CBC - maybe a week or two ago!

I think more pressing at the moment is the end of prohibition with respect to the chicago-style killings in the lower mainland.

the government needs to step in and take away a major revenue source of these criminal gangs.

the government needs to look at using existing government agencies - suchs as the bc liquor stores, and bc doctors and pharmacists - to replace these out of control drug dealers.

as long as the sale of drugs is not under government control, huge untaxed streams of cash will go to fund the criminal organizations and their killings.

Mr. Joshua Paul
E-mail:  Joshua@neocodesoftware.com

Dear Mr. Paul:

I am responding to your January 23, 2009 e-mail, addressed to the Honourable Wally Oppal, Attorney General, regarding your concerns about the screening of applicants to police agencies in British Columbia.  I apologize for the delay in my reply.

I agree it is important for citizens to have confidence that applicants are properly screened before entering the police service.  Police officers are hired by, work for, and can be fired by their respective police agencies.  All recruits in British Columbia receive initial recruit training at the Justice Institute of British Columbia or at the national training facility in Regina for the RCMP, and all officers are subject to background checks and thorough hiring procedures.

In addition, processes exist to ensure police officers are held to account for their actions.  Police agencies have high standards regarding code of conduct and ethics, and internal review processes and policies are in place to ensure that complaints are recorded and investigated as required.

There are a number of ways that police officers are held accountable for their actions.  I assure you that police officers are not above the law and can be charged with a criminal offence.  Police officers, like all individuals, are subject to the rule of law and must act within the provisions of the Constitution Act, the Criminal Code of Canada, and other laws.

All police agencies offer and promote training on policing in culturally diverse communities, and actively recruit members from varied backgrounds.

Thank you for writing with your concerns about this important topic.

Yours sincerely,

John van Dongen
Solicitor General

rumpelstiltskin - alternate - short - oil

rumpletstiltskin
retold by joshua scott paul

Once upon a time, a poor oil and gas producer named loman miller, was out drinking with his Bilderberger buddies. One by one they all got to bragging about their children, and loman, who was so proud of his daughter Jeannie, bragged that his university educated daughter would be a good wife for the president, as she had invented a way to synthesize straw into oil.

One of his friends or enemies told the president, who had Jeannie quietly and efficiently kidnapped on grounds of national security and had her put in a top security facility with all the latest equipment put at her disposal - for her "safety."

The president came to visit her, "Synthesize this straw in to oil for the good of the nation in 30 days, or you and your father could be abducted by enemies of the state and executed." The president continued to mock her, "Of course if you succeed I would be happy to ask your father for your hand in marriage," she was told with a sneer.

First one week passed, then two weeks passed. The third week passed. A few more days flew by, till it was the night before - and still she couldn't synthesize straw into oil.

From out of nowhere a little man appeared. He looked her up and down and said - 'what will you give me if I synthesize this straw into oil?'

Jeannie said 'I have nothing to give you.'

'Give me that gold necklace around your neck,' the little man told her.

'But that was my mother's necklace. It is all I have to remember her by. Don't ask for that,' Jeannie pleaded.

'What good is the necklace if can't save your life? Do you think the executioner will not slip it from your neck after he shoots you in the back of the head? Would your mother want you to keep the necklace and lose your life instead?' asked the the little man.

'What if you run away after I give you the necklace?' she asked.

He gripped her neck with surprising speed and strength - 'I could take it now,' he said and then let go.

'Take it then,' she said slipping it over her head.

He put the necklace around his neck, and set to work configuring the equipment, programming the computers, feeding the straw into the DNA sequencers, and as he worked he began to sing a lullaby. And the lullaby, the sound of the spinning separators and the hypnotic pumping of the vacuums soon put Jeannie to sleep.

The dawn broke, and the president came and saw that the straw had been synthesized into oil.

"A fluke. It could happen to anyone. Put this into my strategic petroleum reserves, and move her in to a larger facility. This time give her more straw!" The president turned to Jeannie, "Synthesize this straw in to oil for the good of the nation in 30 days, or you and your father could be abducted by enemies of the state, tortured and executed. Your not getting away that easily. You will need to do it again. I don't know how you did what you did, but you won't be able to do it a second time!"

First one week passed, then two weeks passed. The third week passed. A few more days flew by, till it was once again the night before - and still she had nothing done.

From out of nowhere the same little man appeared. He looked her up and down and said - 'what will you give me if I synthesize this straw into oil?'

Jeannie said 'I have nothing to give you.'

He said 'Give me that gold ring on your finger.'

'But that was my mother's wedding ring. Don't ask for that,' Jeannie pleaded.

'What good is the ring if can't save your life? Do you think the executioner will not slip it from your finger after he shoots you in the back of the head? Would your mother want you to keep the ring and lose your life instead?' asked the the little man.

'What if you run away after I give you the ring?' she asked.

He gripped her hand with surprising speed and strength - 'I can take it now, just like I could have taken the necklace last night. And I didn't run away last night did I?' and then let go.

'Take it then,' she said slipping it off her finger.

He put the ring on the necklace around his neck, and set to work configuring the equipment, programming the computers, feeding the straw into the DNA sequencers, and once again he began to sing a lullaby. And the lullaby, the sound of the spinning separators and the hypnotic pumping of the vacuums soon put Jeannie to sleep for a second time.

The dawn broke, and the president came and saw that even more straw had been synthesized into oil.

"Put this into my strategic petroleum reserves. Now move her in to the largest hangar we have and this time make sure you give her all the straw you've got!"

Just like every other time she was told "Synthesize this straw in to oil for the good of the nation in 30 days, or you and your father could be abducted by enemies of the state, brainwashed, tortured and executed."

First one week passed, then two weeks passed. The third week passed. A few more days flew by, till it was the night before - and still she hadn't been able to synthesize straw into oil.

In the hangar Jeannie busied herself configuring the equipment, programming the computers, feeding the straw into the DNA sequencers. She couldn't give up. But nothing was working. The straw was being turned in to mud.

Something was missing, but what?

She's seen straw synthesized into oil twice - she knew it was possible. but she just couldn't make it work. there were too many combinations. she couldn't figure it out.

for millions of years humans have survived disasters, jeannie thought to herself, she could survive this small disaster. not an ice age. not a meteor. not a solar flare. not a disease or a volcano or a tsunami. just converting grass into gas. just a few more tweaks and she'd have it. but it's impossible. its too far away.

jeannie, too exhausted to cry slides her back down the side of the machine and puts her head in her arms.

As she was starting to go to sleep a familiar voice says to her 'what will you give me this time, if I synthesize all this straw into oil?'

'I have nothing left. You have taken everything, I have nothing left to give.' she said.

He looks her in the eye and says 'Give me your first child.'

'I couldn't do that. I will not do that. I would rather die than give you my child. What kind of mother would sell her child's life to save her own? Have mercy.' Jeannie pleaded.

'Who knows,' the little man says, 'maybe you will never have a child, what harm can come of it? Anyway you are going to die if you don't give me a child. At least if you give me a child - you will have had a child - a child to pass on your destiny - and your child may have a chance at a better life than you. How can you deny that child their chance at fighting inequality?' said the little man.

'What if I run away after I give birth?' she asked.

'I will hunt you down and kill you, I will kill your child, I will kill every last one of your family, I will kill your friends, and I will kill everyone who ever knew you, until every last memory of you is gone.' he says.

'Take it then,' she said, 'if i have i child it will be yours.'

He then set to work configuring the equipment, programming the computers, feeding the straw into the DNA sequencers, and he began to sing a lullaby. And soon the lullaby, the sound of the spinning separators and the hypnotic pumping of the vacuums soon made Jeannie sleepy. But this time she was ready, and she stayed awake and recorded everything, and finally at long last all the machine was done.

The dawn broke, and the president came and saw that all the straw had been synthesized into oil.

"Good. Put this into my strategic petroleum reserves. Now you will marry me."

Within the year, the president and jeannie had married and a beautiful baby boy was born.

Remembering her promise to the little man, she doubled spending on white house security.

One day the little man appeared and said "Lady, I have come for the child."

But she refused, begged for mercy, and finally threatened to kill the child rather than have the child taken from her.

"I will have mercy on you, with one condition - you have 3 days to guess my name."

Immediately Jeannie dispatched every resource at her disposal out looking for clues, hints and threads.

The next day the little man came and she guessed. But every guess was wrong...

Jeannie redoubled her teams efforts, increasing the bounty placed on the information leading to locating the little man's name.

The next day the little man came again and again she guessed. Again every guess was wrong...

Jeannie redoubled her teams efforts, doubling the bounty placed on the information leading to locating the little man's name.

And finally, improbably, because this is a story, one of her security teams was able to locate the missing link and find out his name.

The little man pranced in, eager to collect his bounty when she bent down and whispered his name.

His fury was so great at hearing her say his name, that he tore himself in two.

The End.

just some negative thoughts

just some negative thoughts

1. i shouldn't surf http://glozer.net/trendy/ until kids are asleep
2. i shouldn't shout at the kids from the sofa while surfing
3. shouting at them to stop fighting is dumb, painful and depressing and hurts their feelings
4. flying from vancouver to seattle in a q400 dash 8 is depressing. the seats are small. there's no sink to wash your hands. your carry on luggage stays outside. (Danish aircraft (Dash-Q400) crashes during landing - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tu89SIBDizQ, and http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/De_Havilland_Canada_Dash_8)
5. carson city, nevada has been surviving for a while. it is depressing. less depressing than the lower east side of vancouver where i work, but whats similar is the feel of legislated poverty
6. the reason i went is to confront my doubts and fears about making a deposit on a heat to electricity machine.
7. the heat to electricity machine exists in a corrugated metal machine shop off the highway with detritus scattered around.
8. inside there are cars, machines, engines, and strangely a PET bottle sorter. we get our picture taken with the 1993 top fuel drag racing car
9. like north korean demonstration villagers, staff have been brought in to fire up a machine so we can see it run and prove that it is alive
10. there are 2 new machines in various states of readiness waiting to go to customers, and one old machine called frankenstein.
11. frankenstein is like an old zoo animal, or a tired, tawdry alien, that is being tortured. compared to the two customer units, frankenstein sprouts analog gauges and a profusion of extra little pipes like a disease.
12. i feel oddly guilty torturing this old machine to prove that it is really able to eat heat and shit electricity
13. the 4 stage natural gas boiler outside is woken up, and we gather around to listen to the pings and clanks as each stage fires up accelerating the water temperature increases
14. the warning siren sounds once, and the machine shakes itself and hisses to life, growling louder and louder as the electricity climbs to 31.4kwh
15. and that's all. there is no climax. no show. the machine runs. the villagers are bored having had to do go through these machines before. i am showed the analog gauges proving its able to extract power. i am showed the computer that confirms what the analog gauges showed. there is a much awe and excitement as an usher showing people to their seats in an 2nd run movie theatre
16. next stop is the factory where two units are being built. 5 more are laid out. but as i here the workers discuss, the vital components are coming arriving soon.
17. each unit is different from the next unit as the are very much a work in progress - improving as more and more units are made
18. next to the main production facility an empty warehouse is being prepared to make the large units. maybe none have been made yet.
19. a bunch of generators for 50kw units wait on pallets in a corner. in another corner the large heat exchangers for the 500kw units wait.
20. i keep repeating to myself that something good could happen.
21. i have called 3 or 4 companies. so far not a good fit. i know i haven't called enough places to give up but i was looking for a good sign.
22. however i will figure out how to extract heat from the oil sands water or the nuclear reactor water.
23. or i will find companies that have the heat and sell them power

hi

hi.

i watched a south korean brothers at war movie about the korean war - online - http://www.watch-movies.net/movies/tae_guk_gi_the_brotherhood_of_war/.

to say that it glorifies war is enough.

brothers are killing each other, each others wives, and each others children.

as they did then, so do they do now.

what i have written, so incomplete, so shallow, so missing the point.

insane.

a monkey / ape gone off it's head - something like that from Ronald Wright's 2004 Massey Lectures.

note:

- did our ancestors die on the battlefields so we could let merchants ruin our planet?

- we fought for freedom so we could be enslaved by fascists dressed up as capitalists?

- captilalism must be rescued from the monarchies of oil and military that hold it hostage

ps - what started so well - http://www.archives.gov/exhibits/charters/bill_of_rights_transcript.html - how did it go so wrong?

pps - why is relegated to the archives and not writ large?

doors to the world of spirit

those who love the universe have opened the doors to the world of spirit for us

they have showed us the miracles of:

1. the big bang
2. the birth of the galaxy
3. the birth of the sun
4. the birth of the earth
5. the birth of our parents
6. our birth

this is heaven
you have your gifts
and they are your ancestors
which stretch back to the beginning of time

evolve or die - a manifesto forward

a new evolution is needed

evolution is critical
- must not rely on faith
- science and evolution is needed to survive
- evolve or die

civilisation collapse - wealth of nations
- ecosystem destruction
- we are nearing the end
- ocean's end
- land's end
- atmosphere's end
- pollutant's end
- population's end
- faith's end
- we have destroyed the world's reproductive power in 5,000 years of
civilisation

bright side
- we are arguably as old as the universe
- we are arguably childern of the big bang, the milky way, our sun, our
planet
- we have survived multiple catastropic events
- chaos hasn't killed us yet
- we haven't killed ourselves yet

room at the bottom
- be the bottom
- we have to go back to the beginning
- rock eaters
- thermovores
- photosynthesis

a new wealth of nations
- ecosystem replication
- bio mimicry and then some
- life creates opportunities for life
- new sustainable energy sources are needed
- the wealth of the old nations is gone

since the issue is population control

since the issue is excess population

the solution is:

- birth control
- rewarding fewer or no children
- penalizing families with more than two children
- offering incentives to the elderly to "retire" early

disaster is the result of exponential population growth which causes

disaster is the result of exponential population growth which causes

1. expenses grow to exceed expenses
2. populations grow to exceed ecosystems
3. human societies concentrate power in fewer hands
4. global warming is a result of excess population
5. war is a result of excess population
6. civilization collapse is a result of excess population
7. pollution is a result of excess population

so why is there is excess population?

so that after the coming collapse there will be enough individuals to

the one good book giving tradition

Hey all - lets enjoy this holiday by celebrating the first even one good
book giving festival!

Why give one and only one book this holiday between families?

1. good the environment
2. good for the economy
3. good for learning
4. good for the future
5. good for sharing reading as a family
6. good for cooperative reading
7. good for reading alone
8. good for travelling

Entry in the Encyclopaedia Pan Galactica for "the one good book giving
tradition"

and so as christmas season comes closer
let us examine the tradition known as the one good book giving festival
this year, families all around the world are participating in the
ancient one good book giving tradition.

the one good book giving tradition is characterized by families giving
each a book wrapped in "wrapping paper" as a physical object to
symbolize non physical relationships - such as emotional bonds.

this ancient tradition dates thousands of years back, to the year 2008,
in the first 250,000 years of our species.

not much information is available about life at this time, except that
is the year many ancient societies abandoned the old tradition of
consuming vast amounts of resources to symbolize emotional in the
production and destruction of consumer goods.

finally societies found a more environmentally sustainable practice in
the tradition of families giving one good book to each other as a better
way to symbolize emotional ties.

Black holes the mother / father of all creation

"Anyway, remember this as well: even though black holes can cause death and destruction on a major scale, they also help galaxies themselves form! So we owe our existence to them."

tortilla pizza

1. cast iron pan
2. 8 frozen tortila
3. 12 squares cheese
4. 1/2 cup salsa
5. 2 ounces of red chili sauce (tabasco)
6. cumin / coriander poweder
7. bake till cooked
8. side dishes - 1 sliced tomato, 1/8 red onion finely diced, 3 shots
blue cheese dressing

how the economy works

1. IMAGINE THERE ARE 3 PEOPLE
HANNA, JOSH AND JEANNIE

2.imagine for some reason hanna has all the money and the other two dont
have any money

3.imagine for some reason that of the two people who don't have money,
that both of them want money

4. IMAGINE THAT FOR SOME REASON ONE OF THE TWO PEOPLE ALWAYS WANTS TO
EARN A PROFIT AND KEEP SOME OF THE MONEY THEY TOUCH

5. imagine that the other one can't figure out how to keep any money

play the game like this

1. give 4 sticks to "hanna"
2. put a bucket of sticks far away from "jeannie"
3. now ask all of them if they want more money - listen to each persons
answer
4. now ask "hanna" to ask "josh" if "josh" wants a dollar
5. now ask "josh" to say yes i want a dollar
6. now ask "hanna" to ask "josh" to give the 4 sticks to "jeannie" on
the condition the "jeannie" gives "josh" 6 sticks back when "hanna" ask
"josh" to ask "jeannie"
7. now ask "josh" to ask "jeannie" if she wants 4 sticks
8. now ask "jeannie" to say yes
9. now ask "josh" to hand the sticks to "jeannie" and you can have them
you put pay me back 6 when i ask
10. now ask "jeannie" to take the sticks
11. now ask "jeannie" to play with the sticks
12. now ask "hanna" to ask "josh" for the sticks back
13. now ask "josh" to ask "jeannie" for the sticks
14. now ask "jeannie" to give 4 sticks to "josh"
15. now ask "josh" to ask jeannie for 2 more sticks
16. now ask "jeannie" to get up and look around for sticks
17. now ask "jeannie" to find the bucket of sticks and take 2
18. now ask "jeannie" to give the sticks the "josh"
19. now ask "josh" to give 5 sticks to "hanna"

the moral is - jeannie still has nothing, josh has 1, and hanna now has
five BUT at 1 time jeannie had all the sticks, and at another time josh
had all the money

6. NOW IMAGINE THAT OUT OF 1000 PEOPLE, 1 OF THEM IS HANNA, 11 OF THEM
ARE JOSH, 989 OF THEM ARE JEANNIE

7. BUT SOME HOW hanna is able to keep getting josh to get jeannie to
give josh the money to give to hanna

priests of civilization collapse

1. the priests of rapa nui that demanded ever greater heads be carved for the future properity
2. the pension priests of wall street that demanded ever greater percentages of the economy to protect retirement incomes

how is knowledge power?

i want to know just exactly how my knowledge is power?

so i know that:

1. past civilizations collapse when they exceed their environments
2. past civilizations "priests" demand ever larger sacrifices to bring back past successes
3. the larger sacrifices require increased environmental demands from already weakened ecosystems
4. the weakened ecosystems and the civilizations eating them, have weakened immune systems and are more vulnerable to infection

if i were a prophet

if i were a prophet
here's what i see

thirsty
hungry
sick
tired
scared
greed
exclusion

these are the tools power uses to control people

i see the powerful harvesting millions of the lives of the weak

like farmers planting a crop
the powerful lull the weak into a false sense of security
and the weak bring out their lives and invest their lives and feel
powerful for a summer
while like chickens they are breed in a frenzy, getting plump for the
slaughter

and then their wealth is stripped from them
their houses are worthless

and to feed their families
men and woman sell everything

the mouse and the elephant

is it really the mouse and the elephant?
could it be the snake and eve?

how would you tell the parable of the describing the decline of
civilizations that have eaten the forbidden fruit of good and evil
and have been thrown out of paradise
and have grown old and died?

imagine the large, but mostly poor elephant
perhaps that elephant symbolizes china or india
with large populations, a very small minority of which are wealthy
beyond measure

perhaps these wealthy but small populations could be symbolized by the
elephants beautiful tail?
or perhaps the trunk?
or perhaps a tiny parasol for protecting the elephants eyes while the
rest of it's body burns?

maybe the industrialized, sparesly populated, west is represented by a mouse
perhaps a well dressed mouse, with a tiny parasol - which covers its
whole body
perahps a well dressed and well ARMED mouse, with a tiny parasol and
nuclear powered aircraft carriers

now imagine that mouse has made some amazing money making machines
which actually just take beautiful nature, kill it, and take a small
piece, and throw the rest away, and keep a tiny piece
which is quickly or slowly melting the planet the mouse and elephant live on

now, only a very minority of the industrialized west is wealthy beyond
measure
and they understand what they are doing

no prize for you

no prize for you

first off
what do i want to say?
what do i want the goal to be?
what do i want to accomplish?

i want to do something worthy of existence
i want to do something about the collapse of civilsation
i want to do something healthy

then excercise - you dont now
then eat right - you dont now
then give more to your relationships - you dont now

ok thats not what i really want then
i want fame
i want fortune
i want force

thats what my appetite desires

so what do i know?

extraordinary wealth is created by theft
theft from nature - resource extraction - $2 to produce a barrel of oil
theft from life - agriculture - $2 brazilian rain forest non productive
dairy cow hamburger
theft from soul - prostituion - $2 a day for haitian working in
dominican republics sugar can farm
theft from death - war - peaceful death stolen to acquire resources to
finance the cost of the war, the cost of reconstruction, and the cost of
the interest
theft in usury - mortgage the americans people children to force the
iraqis to mortgage their children (force the seller to sell, and the
buyer to buy)
theft in ideas - search engines - content creators not compensated for
their work

that extraordinary wealth attracts more thieves who seek to steal from
the first thieves

how does warren buffet or bill gatess fit? what did they steal? their
immense wealth is not the result of a fair deal.

the franchisee
the investor
the patsy

theft and oppression go hand and hand

such that oppression is often required for the theft to occur - give me
your wallet or else
working as muscle in the shakedown is little more than a living, as the
thief you work for will always steal from you

a very dark picture of the human psyche
but it is a zero sum game

A parade of seasons: birth betrayal burial

Narrator: I am the narrator. Before you a prison. A king collects
prisoners and territory to take more territory and more prisoners. The
prisoners work for the king to give him more victory.
What fuels the war is the power from the newly conquered lands.
As long as some peasants live to work the land, and the enemy soldiers
killed or imprisoned the empire grows larger.

Are you not the dream of my soul?

simon peter: all day, all night, I dream of power, wealth and fame

Matthew luke mohammad: I don't need that. I just want to be loved by
two or three beautiful women that drive me insane. And when I come
home from, are they not waiting for me?

Abraham Joshua: I want to make, to build, to leave my mark carved into
the intoxicating flesh of the earth

Mark Joel: breathe in the suffering of the world. The sacrifice of the
innocent, nothing is better. Is this not seperates man from beast? Not
language, not brain size, not tools, not self awareness. Empathy. We
lack it. We can torture. We can imprison. We can enslave. We can tax
without representatin.

the most important things i know

Bob: what are the most important things i know?
Bill: how do you define important?
Bob: stuff that could save your life? your childrens life? stuff that if you knew could save your life?
Bill: how about stuff that if you know makes life worth living? makes life seem a little more meaningful?
Bob: ok
Bill: we are star shit.
Bob: huh?
Bill: our staff was born in a huge explosion and we are the crap it didn't need to live.
Bob: knowing that makes your life better?
Bill: perspective is everything.
Bob: what else do you know?
Bill: we are physically made out of star shit and everything that lives, is alive because of energy from the sun. the sun is the creator and source of all life. without solar radiation there would be no life.
Bob: how is this relevant? knowing that makes my life worth living?
Bill: you are directly related to that star shining in the sky - in every possible way.
Bob: so? your point is?
Bill: your family history is billions of years old.
Bob: i thought you were going to tell me about global warming, sea level rising, radioactive waste, drug resistant bacteria, ozone holes, co2 levels, plastic ocean pollution, farm land erosion, and fresh water depletion?
Bill: what can i say about? human population will crash, but civilization will exist, but totally different from today
Bob: why?
Bill: its what we are making.

Hi Lou, We had our weekly meeting and the response seemed more positive... one of the editors has seen this kind of thing on a BBC site and liked it. Basically the gist of the response is they are interested as long as it doesn't create much work for anyone on our end (as everyone's pretty swamped). Would you guys be creating the quiz content or would that be something we'd have to do? Cheers, Mike

Perhaps you might conclude:

if you are evil then launch nuclear strikes against every population

if you are pragmatic, selfish and love power then you might get a degree
and join the army as an officer

if you are pragmatic, selfish and love money then you might invest in
water, railroads, soybeans and weapons

if you are a secular humanist you might get a degree as a doctor

if you are pragmatic and compassionate god might reveal his plan for his
people to you

if you are pragmatic and honest you might become a green politician that
doesn't get elected

if you are curious and academic you might study and publish books about
civilisation collapse

if you are pragmatic and nihilistic you might accept that evolution has brought us here and only evolution can save us

if you are me you might post blogs and accept that evolution has bred bullies for fame, power and greed only too well

if you are compassionate and a programmer you might make a dashboard for the world health index allowing people to get daily updates on the planet

if you are a multi naitonal publicly traded company you might be changing the world but no memory of having done it

if you are in love you might love all the more fiercely and passionately knowing so little time is left.

freedom - review of the last hours of ancient sunshine

here's my review of the last hours of ancient sunshine

"freedom"

ban the oil sands
ban the internal combustion engine
ban the garbage that can't be eaten
ban over population - the environmental footprint
ban tv
ban corporations

invest in power generation
invent in food production

rumplestiltskin
no forgiveness on earth
eating the ancient sunlight
a tragedy a horror the ending already known
the blood of innocents
the cruel king
the devil's bargain
the prison owner's profit
the parents selling children to save the,
the surrender now and die later or die now

war against scarcity - driven out - we fight back
we can't move - there is no where to go
we have to fight
climate change always brings battles

but in the end we die
the bugs that have been waiting
for 200,000 years
get to eat us

the source of evil

the god
of war
is hungry
for slaves
to enslave the world
by destroying and taking their power
confronting the free with a choice

fight him and meet him with violence is to be enslaved
submit to him is to be enslaved

who have meet the devil and survived un-en-slaved and do not seek to enslave others?

Re: teaching korean esl students korean folk tales in english

I met with Hank today and explored the idea of teaching korean esl
students korean folk tales in english - that they can share with they
return home.

Some korean esl students don't know korean folk tales - just as some
english speaking french immsersion students don't know english folk
tales.

Some korean esl students don't have an enjoyable experience of
speaking
english - their experience has been restricted to the classroom.

Here are some of the ideas that I want to play with:

- where is home? how do stories make us at home? where is our
ancestral
village?

- immigration and freedom - conceived in southern california - my
parents escaped the united states during the vietnam war before i was
born - and came to canada to be free

- how the effects of the global exploitation of oil change koreans and
canadians

- how the effects of the korean-canadian exploitation of the tar sands
may change koreans and canadians

- how global warming, rising sea levels, loss of farm land, increasing
pollution levels, and increasing population may change koreans and
canadians

- how the decline of american empire may change koreans and canadians

- what is multicultural vs cultural segregation?

- how are korea town and down town multicultural?

- where do we experience each others cultures?

- folk tales are survivors of past empire collapses - acting
perhaps as
a salve, an antidote, or a sweetener

- using korean folk tales is a way for korean esl to share their
culture
with english speakers

- using korean folk tales to and uncompressing the meaning in the
stories

- retelling the stories from a contemporary perspective
example - rumplestiltskin turning tar-sand into oil - or straw into
oil

- finding some place for these stories in korean norae-bang, video-
bang,
and pc-bang where people go to enjoy themselves

- finding a few coaches rehearse coaching groups through question and
answer style story telling - aka "gossip"
example - did you hear what happened rumplestiltskin?

- finding a few esl schools that will tell students about the program

- several stories are selected and read to a group of esl students

- use information of civilization / empire collapse, global warming to
decompress the stories because we share the planet
example: bill rees (vancouver) (enviromental footprint), jared diamond
(collapse), ronald wright (vancouver) (short history of progress), and
elizabeth kolbert (fieldnotes from a catastrophe) are presented
or we watch some movies:
http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=4271982381147720351
http://video.google.ca/videoplay?docid=-8460217464978001719&hl=en-CA

http://www.learner.org/vod/asx/seattle/Out_of_the_Past_08.asx

- students join the group of the story they want to tell

- the story is explored, decompressed and rehearsed for retelling
during
a day workshop from 9am to 5pm, then there is a break, and then
each of
the 6 groups presents their story for 10 minutes

- if this works well, my dream is to work in other asian languages as
well as french

- claim the chat and the phone as space for art by using web based
interactive geographically distributed story telling performances via
instant messaging such as MSN Messenger or SMS phone text messaging

and then yesterday - or was it today - listening to gloria in excelsis deo i accepted the true fate of the world

and then yesterday - or was it today - listening to gloria in excelsis deo i accepted the true fate of the world

i will not store my treasures on earth

i will not covet power, fame or fortune

as i have been told

sigh

can there truly be character change? did my perspective change? or was it always just a matter of time?

is it a not a blessing that the meek may finally inherit the earth when every last drop of oil is gone?

"nor making of stuffs a thousand
yards a minute,
...
will make us
one whit stronger, happier
or wiser."
when all the ancient sunlight has been purged from the world
no more rockets will be launched
and we will return to killing our brothers and sisters with rocks

what i mean to say is
in the beginning - when i first learned about malthus
when i first read the mote in god's eye
of course i had hope - that i could be the miracle
that i could imagine, create, invent a way
to break the cycle of collapse and the descent into terrifying darkness

i then i realized that i thought this
because i thought that i was different
that i was not my fathers son
not the son of cain
that i would not have to kill to eat
that i would not have to fight my brother
that there was enough of earth's bounty for us all to share

but then somehow slowly
i begin to realize
that we have always been at war
forced from our homelands

and i couldn't understand how my fathers and mothers
had sacrificed their children
how they had pawned their children's inheritance for slavery
for comfort
for convenience

later i learned
and understood
how after endless wars, and wanting, and prisons, and forced marches
and deprivation
how i would do anything to never have to live through that again
that i need never be poor and watch my children starve
and selling mysqlf and them into slavery was better than the alternative

and that back from the wars
i wanted compensation
no matter who paid

but now?

i accept it
i accept trying to hold it together from flying apart and descending into darkness
i accept trying to take of your family, selling what ever can be sold to never go back into the darkness
i accept trying to find a safe walled city that will survive the collapse with walls thick enough
i accept trying to minister to the dying easing their suffering
but now i accept that i can find my place in what ever

rumplestiltskin fairy version v5

Once upon a time, a poor oil and gas priest named loman miller, was out drinking with his Bilderberger buddies. They were all depressed that their oil supplies were running dry while consumption was increasing beyond the 30 billion barrels we now consume, and the last remaining source of oil available to maintain civilisation as know it is the tar sands. One by one they all got to bragging about their children, and loman, who was so proud of his daughter Jeannie, bragged that his daughter had invented a way to turn tar sand into oil that uses less than the 1 barrel of oil needed to produce 3 barrels now. Nothing can be done about the 6 tons of sand, or the 6 to 12 barrels of water needed to make those 3 barrels of oil though.

One of his friends or enemies told the president, who had Jeannie quietly and efficiently kidnapped by HomeLand Security on grounds of national security and had her put in a top security facility with all the latest equipment put at her disposal - for her "safety."

The president came to visit her, "turn this tar sand in to oil for the good of the nation in 30 days, or your father could be executed as an enemy of the state." The president continued to mock her, "Of course if you succeed I would be happy to ask your father for your hand in marriage," she was told with a sneer.

First one week passed, then two weeks passed. The third week passed. A few more days flew by, till it was the night before - and still she couldn't turn tar sand into oil.

Her whole body shaking, she know that her father was going to die.

Then from out of nowhere a small little man with wings appeared. He looked her up and down and said - 'what will you give me if I turn this tar sand into oil?'

Jeannie said 'I have nothing to give you.'

'Give me that gold necklace around your neck,' the little man told her.

'But that was my mother's necklace. It is all I have to remember her by. Please don't ask for that,' Jeannie pleaded.

'What good is the necklace if can't save your life? Do you think the HomeLand Security executioner will not slip it from your neck after he shoots you in the back of the head? Would your mother want you to keep the necklace and lose your life instead?' asked the the little man.

'What if you run away after I give you the necklace?' she asked.

He gripped her neck with surprising speed and strength - 'I could take it now,' he said and then let go.

'Take it then,' she said slipping it over her head.

He put the necklace around his neck, told her to go to sleep and set to work configuring the equipment, programming the computers, feeding the tar sand into the DNA sequencers, and as he worked he began to sing the oil song (1). And the lullaby, the sound of the spinning separators and the hypnotic pumping of the vacuums soon put Jeannie to sleep.

The dawn broke, and the president came and saw that the tar sand had been turned into oil.

"A fluke. It could happen to anyone. Put this into my oil bank, and move her in to a larger facility. This time give her more tar sand!" The president turned to Jeannie, "turn this tar sand in to oil for the good of the nation in 30 days, or your father could be tortured and executed as an enemy of the state. Your not getting away that easily. You will need to do it again. I don't know how you did what you did, but you won't be able to do it a second time!"

First one week passed, then two weeks passed. The third week passed. A few more days flew by, till it was once again the night before - and still she had nothing done.

She wondered if the little man would appear like he had last time and what she could give him this time. Perhaps it had been nothing more than a dream. But her hand reached for where her necklace had been and came away empty.

From out of nowhere the same little man appeared. He looked her up and down and said - 'what will you give me this time if I turn this tar sand into oil?'

Jeannie said 'I have nothing to give you.'

He said 'Give me that gold ring on your finger.'

'But that was my mother's wedding ring. Don't ask for that,' Jeannie pleaded.

'What good is the ring if can't save your life? Do you think the HomeLand Security executioner will not slip it from your finger after he shoots you in the back of the head? Would your mother want you to keep the ring and lose your life instead?' asked the the little man.

'What if you run away after I give you the ring?' she asked.

He gripped her hand with surprising speed and strength - 'I can take it now, just like I could have taken the necklace last night. And I didn't run away last night did I?' and then let go.

'Take it then,' she said slipping it off her finger.

He put the ring on the necklace around his neck, told her to go to sleep and set to work configuring the equipment, programming the computers, feeding the tar sand into the DNA sequencers, and once again he began to sing the oil song. And the lullaby, the sound of the spinning separators and the hypnotic pumping of the vacuums soon put Jeannie to sleep for a second time.

The dawn broke, and the president came and saw that even more tar sand had been turned into oil.

"Put this into my oil bank. Now move her in to the largest hangar we have and this time make sure you give her all the tar sand you've got!"

Just like every other time she was told "turn this tar sand in to oil for the good of the nation in 30 days, or your father could be brainwashed, tortured and executed as an enemy of the state."

First one week passed, then two weeks passed. The third week passed. A few more days flew by, till it was the night before - and still she hadn't been able to turn tar sand into oil.

So she busied herself configuring the equipment, programming the computers, feeding the tar sand into the DNA sequencers. She couldn't give up. But nothing was working. The tar sand was being turned in to mud.

Something was missing, but what?

She's seen tar sand turned into oil twice - she knew it was possible. but she just couldn't make it work. there were too many combinations. she couldn't figure it out.

for millions of years my ancestors have survived disasters, jeannie thought to herself, she could survive this small disaster. not an ice age. not a meteor. not a solar flare. not a disease or a volcano or a tsunami. just converting tar sand into oil. just a few more tweaks and she'd have it. but it's impossible. its too far away.

jeannie, too exhausted to cry slides her back down the side of the machine and puts her head in her arms.

She wondered if the little man would appear like he had last time and what she could give him this time. Perhaps it had been nothing more than a dream. But her hand reached for where her ring had been and came away empty. She knew she had nothing to give him this time. She hoped he would come and save her and her father, and at the same the time she hoped he wouldn't come because she had nothing left to give him and her father would die.

As she was starting to go to sleep a familiar voice says to her 'what will you give me this time, if I turn all this tar sand into oil?'

'I have nothing left. You have taken everything, I have nothing left to give, go away and leave me alone.' she said.

'When the child is three years old I will come to claim it as my right.'

He then told her to go to sleep and set to work configuring the equipment, programming the computers, feeding the tar sand into the DNA sequencers, and he began to sing the oil song. And soon the lullaby, the sound of the spinning separators and the hypnotic pumping of the vacuums soon made Jeannie sleepy. But this time she was ready, and she stayed awake and remembered everything, and finally at long last all the machine was done.

The dawn broke, and the president came and saw that all the tar sand had been turned into oil.

"Good. Put this into my oil bank. Now you will marry me."

Within the year, the president and jeannie had married and a beautiful baby boy was born.

Remembering her promise to the little man, she tripled spending on white house security, and created a new elite team within HomeLand Security to protect the child.

The team trained day and night for 3 years. At all times 5 units had the child in their site, and 25 others were constantly monitoring the situation.

One the eve of the child's first birthday, the first lady called in the army and national guard. she felt safe. the day was almost over and nothing had happened to her or her baby.

then suddenly her 5 agents dropped down dead and the little man appeared and said "Lady, I have come for the child."

But she refused, begged for mercy, and finally threatened to kill the child and herself rather than have the child taken from her.

"I will have mercy on you, with one condition - you have 3 days to guess my name."

Immediately Jeannie dispatched HomeLand Security and the NSA out looking for clues, hints and threads.

The next day the little man came and she guessed. But every guess was wrong...

So then Jeannie deployed the CIA and the FBI to help the HomeLanders and the NSA, increasing the bounty placed on the information leading to locating the little man's name.

The next day the little man came again and again she guessed. Again every guess was wrong...

So then Jeannie deployed the Army, the Navy and the Air Force, doubling the bounty placed on the information leading to locating the little man and eliminate him.

And finally, improbably, because this is a story, one of her security teams was able to locate the missing link and find out his name.

The little man pranced in, eager to collect his child when she bent down and whispered his name.

His fury was so great at hearing her say his name, that he exploded, sending his shattered remains flying through the room.

The End.

the recession and how iraq caused it

the recession and how iraq caused it

"pirates are greedy"

banks historically can make a lot of money investing in wars.

the profits made from wars can allow banks to make alot of very risky
investments - like a subprime mortgage.

but when you are counting on the resources of one of oil richest
countries falling into your lap - why worry?

only - iraq didn't turn out to the pot of gold.

so - banks can't back their subprime debt.

so - big problems.

so - the US is sick till 2011.

and today - we hear yemen has almost finished finished 19 of its 21
aquifers.

how can i make money from the US being sick?

or yemen running out of water?

buy up those foreclosed houses and tear them down for farmland?

turn the abandoned yemen villages into museums?

you can cry all you want

sunday
april 13th
2008
2.29am

you can cry all you want
about nothing wonderful ever happening to you
you can cry all you want
about the end of the world coming nearer

but what's that to you after all?
you won't be here anyway
to see the killing, the mass graves, the food riots and the cannibalism

you say that
and you are right - so right
i was so naive
you have seen it before
but why do my children have to see it?
why can't we put it behind us?
why does my daughter - who has never seen her grandfather...
and why does my son - who has never seen his grandfather...
why do they have to see a world war?

but here you have been at peace
but here you have not been hungry
but here you have not seen your house burned
your family killed
your temples torn down
your people's stories forgotten

but they have
the older peoples have seen
seen it and done it

peace and war
hunger and fullness

how could i imagine after starving for a hundred years
you would not rip the rivers apart
break open the mountains
and feast upon the land with abandon
and drunken - wipe the vomit from your mouth with the all trees in the
forest

how could i imagine after fighting a hundred years war
that coming home you would not take the village girls and get them pregnant
and fill their bellies with more soldiers
that coming home you would not want some comfort, some reward
for all your bloody labours sacrifice

don't panic - it's not - the end of the world as we know it - tee ought walk ee - v3

don't panic - it's not - the end of the world as we know it - tee ought
walk ee

"the lazy dog lies in the sunny licking his fleas"

Don't panic.

Really.

The poor people that are rioting for food are not in Europe and North
America. We are still safe. The rising price of commodities that
civilization as we know it depend on is not the cause for panic.

Yet.

Just because as ancient civilization collapses (Sumer, Rapa Nui, the Maya, Sumer, Catal Huyuc) were proceeded by a dwindling supply of fuel and agricultural product scarcity doesn't mean that the rising prices of oil, wheat, corn, and rice are anything to worry about.

Also don't be alarmed by global warming. Sure it will reduce agricultural yields and drive food prices up further, but that's no cause for concern, as agricultural yields have been declining for the past twenty years anyway.

You can also ignore the rising sea levels. It rising too slowly too have
any impact in the next two or three decades, and the fact that 50% of
worlds population lives within a kilometre of the ocean is nothing to
worry about either. They have plenty of time to move.

The mass extinction of species that is underway at the moment is also
overblown. As many species become extinct their destruction is creating
room for other species to expand into, where they can grow and thrive.
All species become extinct over a long enough time frame anyway.

With respect to rising oil and gas prices - just take a deep breath and
calm down - its not that bad. While it is true that the entire modern
economy exists because of the vast amount of energy being extracted from
fossil fuels at an ever increasing rate as other countries improve their
oil and gas burning capabilities. But even with their lighting up and
burning oil and gas as fast as they can we still have another 45 years
of oil, and 72 years of gas. And when we run of out of oil and gas, we
have 252 years of coal. Of course that is if the world population
doesn't grow.

Are you scared of a baby? How about millions of cute little babies? How
about a billion more super cute darling babies? They are adorable. I
know you are probably worrying about how much food they will eat, how
much oil and gas they will consume, and how much they will pollute. But
they're just babies. Babies aren't scary - I mean it's not like you ever
saw a baby food riot right? And babies don't pollute.

Poisoned rivers, landfills, spent uranium, and dioxins. All sound scary and disastrous right? Wrong. There are still lots of safe places to live - when the garbage piles up to high you can just move somewhere else. Besides these dumps provide jobs for lots of people and their families turning them into fertilizer to grow more food and munitions to kill our enemies.

Perhaps the growing number of deadly diseases is making you anxious? AIDS, hanta virus, West Nile, Bird Flu? Or you scared by the drug resistant diseases we have bred? MRSA, XDR-TB, VRE and clostridium difficile. You will be safe - these only affect weak and poor people. Your wealth and strength will protect you.

But what about my overseas call centres? Will I still be able to call
for tech support for my digital hdtv signal? That's what gated
communities are for. Your digital satellite provider will no doubt have
outsourced to a call centre inside a gated community with it's own
paramilitary security force.

So - relax, sit back, and order another cocktail.

the great wolf lodge - opening in grand mound, wa

A couple months (December 2007) ago I started looking for a good vacation spot for the family.

It's our 10th anniversary, plus I wanted to do some fun things.

However - work is kind of slow - so I didn't want to spend alot of money and go to Disneyland, Hawaii, or Paris as I had originally wanted to.

For some reason I started looking up waterparks - I remember the West Edmonton Mall which has a huge indoor waterpark and theme park.

However the thought of driving more than 4 hours (it's about 14 hours from Vancouver) put me off.

I kept googling. And then I found The Great Wolf Lodge. At the time, the lodge wasn't open yet but it was coming in the spring. I bookmarked it and forgot about it.

Finally spring break was 2 weeks away coming, and I was in desperate need of a vacation, and I looked around again, and my bookmatk http://www.greatwolf.com/Locations/Grandmound/ came up - and they were having opening day specials!

We got to arrive on March 18th, their very first day, and play in the new waterpark, and ride the Howling Tornado.

We paid $209 a night, for 2 nights and 3 days.

Pros:
- kiddie area
- wave pool
- play pool
- fort mackenzie - 2 slides + tub
- 2 two person tube slides
- 1 (+1 coming later) four person tube slides
- giant cuckoo clock with animatronic singing
- reasonable food prices
- friendly staff
- listening to my family howl going on the tornado
- seeing my kids grin coming out of the tube slides!

Cons:
- water is too cold - but maybe this is just because it is warming up?
- slow in room internet
- far away from other activities when you want a pool break
- not enough for my wife to do
- no sauna
- no steam room
- heavy European food (no sushi!)
- the proslide (all the slides) equipment is not integrated into the theme

Conclusion:
- I will come back if I can get $209/night again!!

what am i obsessing about now...

of course i am obsessing about increasing global warmer, creating more air pollution, and generally destroying the environment just for my personal enjoyment ergo i want a new car!!!

my 1996 camry (177,000 kms automatic, green, dented, front suspension problem, broken aerial) needs new brakes and tires. of course i wouldn't dream of fixing it. i would never throw good money after bad. i quickly realized after good service for 9 years i needed a new car.

my wife's 2006 rav4 is a nice car - but it's too nice - and i bought it for her. i want a new car thats mine.

by new car i don't mean new new - i mean new used. i want a car thats new to me - not a car that depreciates 20% after you buy it.

here's my list of requirements:
  • left hand drive - ICBC reports 40% increase in accidents from RHD
  • diesel - i want to buy bio diesel so i can do something with all my deep fat frying oil
  • air bags - as strong is my death wish is - i don't want to die mangled in a car accident - i want to die gloriously in battle - my sword deep in my enemies chest
  • traction control - see above
  • good service and maintenance record - i don't want a money pit
  • $25,000 max - and ideally closer to $15,000 - i can't bear the thought of spending money on a car
ideal but now required
  • station wagon for the dog i don't have and for the lugging around the old 150 lb ibm servers i do have
  • all wheel drive / 4 wheel drive - i just want it ok?
so given those criteria what are my choices?
  • Mercedes E class diesel 4matic station wagon from 1984-1995 ideally from japan - since volume came 1994 with introduction to US - 2009 should be good for importing from japan
  • VW jetta wagon
  • VW passat wagon
however - i just might start a new business - a computer recycling business - and get a cube van with bench seating (so 3 people can ride in front) for that. i can advertise the computer recycling business on it, the troubleshooting business, the software business, the hosting busines and monica's real estate business!
