the most important things i know

Bob: what are the most important things i know?
Bill: how do you define important?
Bob: stuff that could save your life? your childrens life? stuff that if you knew could save your life?
Bill: how about stuff that if you know makes life worth living? makes life seem a little more meaningful?
Bob: ok
Bill: we are star shit.
Bob: huh?
Bill: our staff was born in a huge explosion and we are the crap it didn't need to live.
Bob: knowing that makes your life better?
Bill: perspective is everything.
Bob: what else do you know?
Bill: we are physically made out of star shit and everything that lives, is alive because of energy from the sun. the sun is the creator and source of all life. without solar radiation there would be no life.
Bob: how is this relevant? knowing that makes my life worth living?
Bill: you are directly related to that star shining in the sky - in every possible way.
Bob: so? your point is?
Bill: your family history is billions of years old.
Bob: i thought you were going to tell me about global warming, sea level rising, radioactive waste, drug resistant bacteria, ozone holes, co2 levels, plastic ocean pollution, farm land erosion, and fresh water depletion?
Bill: what can i say about? human population will crash, but civilization will exist, but totally different from today
Bob: why?
Bill: its what we are making.

Hi Lou, We had our weekly meeting and the response seemed more positive... one of the editors has seen this kind of thing on a BBC site and liked it. Basically the gist of the response is they are interested as long as it doesn't create much work for anyone on our end (as everyone's pretty swamped). Would you guys be creating the quiz content or would that be something we'd have to do? Cheers, Mike

if you are pragmatic, selfish and love money then you might invest in

if you are a secular humanist you might get a degree as a doctor

if you are pragmatic and compassionate god might reveal his plan for his

if you are pragmatic and honest you might become a green politician that
doesn't get elected

if you are curious and academic you might study and publish books about

if you are pragmatic and nihilistic you might accept that evolution has brought us here and only evolution can save us

if you are me you might post blogs and accept that evolution has bred bullies for fame, power and greed only too well

if you are compassionate and a programmer you might make a dashboard for the world health index allowing people to get daily updates on the planet

Re: teaching korean esl students korean folk tales in english

I met with Hank today and explored the idea of teaching korean esl
students korean folk tales in english - that they can share with they
return home.

Some korean esl students don't know korean folk tales - just as some
english speaking french immsersion students don't know english folk
tales.

Some korean esl students don't have an enjoyable experience of
speaking
english - their experience has been restricted to the classroom.

Here are some of the ideas that I want to play with:

- where is home? how do stories make us at home? where is our
ancestral
village?

- immigration and freedom - conceived in southern california - my
parents escaped the united states during the vietnam war before i was
born - and came to canada to be free

- how the effects of the global exploitation of oil change koreans and
canadians

- how the effects of the korean-canadian exploitation of the tar sands
may change koreans and canadians

- how global warming, rising sea levels, loss of farm land, increasing
pollution levels, and increasing population may change koreans and
canadians

- how the decline of american empire may change koreans and canadians

- what is multicultural vs cultural segregation?

- how are korea town and down town multicultural?

- where do we experience each others cultures?

- folk tales are survivors of past empire collapses - acting
perhaps as
a salve, an antidote, or a sweetener

- using korean folk tales is a way for korean esl to share their
culture
with english speakers

- using korean folk tales to and uncompressing the meaning in the
stories

- retelling the stories from a contemporary perspective
example - rumplestiltskin turning tar-sand into oil - or straw into
oil

- finding some place for these stories in korean norae-bang, video-
bang,
and pc-bang where people go to enjoy themselves

- finding a few coaches rehearse coaching groups through question and
answer style story telling - aka "gossip"
example - did you hear what happened rumplestiltskin?

- finding a few esl schools that will tell students about the program

- several stories are selected and read to a group of esl students

- use information of civilization / empire collapse, global warming to
decompress the stories because we share the planet
example: bill rees (vancouver) (enviromental footprint), jared diamond
(collapse), ronald wright (vancouver) (short history of progress), and
elizabeth kolbert (fieldnotes from a catastrophe) are presented
or we watch some movies:

http://video.google.ca/videoplay?docid=-8460217464978001719&hl=en-CA

http://www.learner.org/vod/asx/seattle/Out_of_the_Past_08.asx

- students join the group of the story they want to tell

- the story is explored, decompressed and rehearsed for retelling
during
a day workshop from 9am to 5pm, then there is a break, and then
each of
the 6 groups presents their story for 10 minutes

- if this works well, my dream is to work in other asian languages as
well as french

- claim the chat and the phone as space for art by using web based
interactive geographically distributed story telling performances via
instant messaging such as MSN Messenger or SMS phone text messaging

and then yesterday - or was it today - listening to gloria in excelsis deo i accepted the true fate of the world

and then yesterday - or was it today - listening to gloria in excelsis deo i accepted the true fate of the world

i will not store my treasures on earth

i will not covet power, fame or fortune

as i have been told

sigh

can there truly be character change? did my perspective change? or was it always just a matter of time?

is it a not a blessing that the meek may finally inherit the earth when every last drop of oil is gone?

"nor making of stuffs a thousand
yards a minute,
...
will make us
one whit stronger, happier
or wiser."
when all the ancient sunlight has been purged from the world
no more rockets will be launched
and we will return to killing our brothers and sisters with rocks

what i mean to say is
in the beginning - when i first learned about malthus
when i first read the mote in god's eye
of course i had hope - that i could be the miracle
that i could imagine, create, invent a way
to break the cycle of collapse and the descent into terrifying darkness

i then i realized that i thought this
because i thought that i was different
that i was not my fathers son
not the son of cain
that i would not have to kill to eat
that i would not have to fight my brother
that there was enough of earth's bounty for us all to share

but then somehow slowly
i begin to realize
that we have always been at war
forced from our homelands

and i couldn't understand how my fathers and mothers
had sacrificed their children
how they had pawned their children's inheritance for slavery
for comfort
for convenience

later i learned
and understood
how after endless wars, and wanting, and prisons, and forced marches
and deprivation
how i would do anything to never have to live through that again
that i need never be poor and watch my children starve
and selling mysqlf and them into slavery was better than the alternative

and that back from the wars
i wanted compensation
no matter who paid

but now?

i accept it
i accept trying to hold it together from flying apart and descending into darkness
i accept trying to take of your family, selling what ever can be sold to never go back into the darkness
i accept trying to find a safe walled city that will survive the collapse with walls thick enough
i accept trying to minister to the dying easing their suffering
but now i accept that i can find my place in what ever

rumplestiltskin fairy version v5

Once upon a time, a poor oil and gas priest named loman miller, was out drinking with his Bilderberger buddies. They were all depressed that their oil supplies were running dry while consumption was increasing beyond the 30 billion barrels we now consume, and the last remaining source of oil available to maintain civilisation as know it is the tar sands. One by one they all got to bragging about their children, and loman, who was so proud of his daughter Jeannie, bragged that his daughter had invented a way to turn tar sand into oil that uses less than the 1 barrel of oil needed to produce 3 barrels now. Nothing can be done about the 6 tons of sand, or the 6 to 12 barrels of water needed to make those 3 barrels of oil though.

One of his friends or enemies told the president, who had Jeannie quietly and efficiently kidnapped by HomeLand Security on grounds of national security and had her put in a top security facility with all the latest equipment put at her disposal - for her "safety."

The president came to visit her, "turn this tar sand in to oil for the good of the nation in 30 days, or your father could be executed as an enemy of the state." The president continued to mock her, "Of course if you succeed I would be happy to ask your father for your hand in marriage," she was told with a sneer.

First one week passed, then two weeks passed. The third week passed. A few more days flew by, till it was the night before - and still she couldn't turn tar sand into oil.

Her whole body shaking, she know that her father was going to die.

Then from out of nowhere a small little man with wings appeared. He looked her up and down and said - 'what will you give me if I turn this tar sand into oil?'

Jeannie said 'I have nothing to give you.'

'Give me that gold necklace around your neck,' the little man told her.

'But that was my mother's necklace. It is all I have to remember her by. Please don't ask for that,' Jeannie pleaded.

'What good is the necklace if can't save your life? Do you think the HomeLand Security executioner will not slip it from your neck after he shoots you in the back of the head? Would your mother want you to keep the necklace and lose your life instead?' asked the the little man.

'What if you run away after I give you the necklace?' she asked.

He gripped her neck with surprising speed and strength - 'I could take it now,' he said and then let go.

'Take it then,' she said slipping it over her head.

He put the necklace around his neck, told her to go to sleep and set to work configuring the equipment, programming the computers, feeding the tar sand into the DNA sequencers, and as he worked he began to sing the oil song (1). And the lullaby, the sound of the spinning separators and the hypnotic pumping of the vacuums soon put Jeannie to sleep.

The dawn broke, and the president came and saw that the tar sand had been turned into oil.

"A fluke. It could happen to anyone. Put this into my oil bank, and move her in to a larger facility. This time give her more tar sand!" The president turned to Jeannie, "turn this tar sand in to oil for the good of the nation in 30 days, or your father could be tortured and executed as an enemy of the state. Your not getting away that easily. You will need to do it again. I don't know how you did what you did, but you won't be able to do it a second time!"

First one week passed, then two weeks passed. The third week passed. A few more days flew by, till it was once again the night before - and still she had nothing done.

She wondered if the little man would appear like he had last time and what she could give him this time. Perhaps it had been nothing more than a dream. But her hand reached for where her necklace had been and came away empty.

From out of nowhere the same little man appeared. He looked her up and down and said - 'what will you give me this time if I turn this tar sand into oil?'

Jeannie said 'I have nothing to give you.'

He said 'Give me that gold ring on your finger.'

'But that was my mother's wedding ring. Don't ask for that,' Jeannie pleaded.

'What good is the ring if can't save your life? Do you think the HomeLand Security executioner will not slip it from your finger after he shoots you in the back of the head? Would your mother want you to keep the ring and lose your life instead?' asked the the little man.

'What if you run away after I give you the ring?' she asked.

He gripped her hand with surprising speed and strength - 'I can take it now, just like I could have taken the necklace last night. And I didn't run away last night did I?' and then let go.

'Take it then,' she said slipping it off her finger.

He put the ring on the necklace around his neck, told her to go to sleep and set to work configuring the equipment, programming the computers, feeding the tar sand into the DNA sequencers, and once again he began to sing the oil song. And the lullaby, the sound of the spinning separators and the hypnotic pumping of the vacuums soon put Jeannie to sleep for a second time.

The dawn broke, and the president came and saw that even more tar sand had been turned into oil.

"Put this into my oil bank. Now move her in to the largest hangar we have and this time make sure you give her all the tar sand you've got!"

Just like every other time she was told "turn this tar sand in to oil for the good of the nation in 30 days, or your father could be brainwashed, tortured and executed as an enemy of the state."

First one week passed, then two weeks passed. The third week passed. A few more days flew by, till it was the night before - and still she hadn't been able to turn tar sand into oil.

So she busied herself configuring the equipment, programming the computers, feeding the tar sand into the DNA sequencers. She couldn't give up. But nothing was working. The tar sand was being turned in to mud.

Something was missing, but what?

She's seen tar sand turned into oil twice - she knew it was possible. but she just couldn't make it work. there were too many combinations. she couldn't figure it out.

for millions of years my ancestors have survived disasters, jeannie thought to herself, she could survive this small disaster. not an ice age. not a meteor. not a solar flare. not a disease or a volcano or a tsunami. just converting tar sand into oil. just a few more tweaks and she'd have it. but it's impossible. its too far away.

jeannie, too exhausted to cry slides her back down the side of the machine and puts her head in her arms.

She wondered if the little man would appear like he had last time and what she could give him this time. Perhaps it had been nothing more than a dream. But her hand reached for where her ring had been and came away empty. She knew she had nothing to give him this time. She hoped he would come and save her and her father, and at the same the time she hoped he wouldn't come because she had nothing left to give him and her father would die.

As she was starting to go to sleep a familiar voice says to her 'what will you give me this time, if I turn all this tar sand into oil?'

'I have nothing left. You have taken everything, I have nothing left to give, go away and leave me alone.' she said.

He looks her in the eye and says 'Give me your first child.'

'I couldn't do that. I will not do that. I would rather die than give you my child. What kind of mother would sell her child's life to save her own? Have mercy.' Jeannie pleaded.

'Who knows,' the little man says, 'maybe you will never have a child, what harm can come of it? Anyway you are going to die if you don't give me a child. At least if you give me a child - you will have had a child - a child to pass on your destiny - and your child may have a chance at a better life than you. How can you deny that child their chance at fighting inequality?' said the little man.

'What if I run away after I give birth?' she asked.

'I will hunt you down and kill you, I will kill your child, I will kill every last one of your family, I will kill your friends, and I will kill everyone who ever knew you, until every last memory of you is gone.' he says.

'Take it then,' she said, 'if i have i child it will be yours.'

'When the child is three years old I will come to claim it as my right.'

He then told her to go to sleep and set to work configuring the equipment, programming the computers, feeding the tar sand into the DNA sequencers, and he began to sing the oil song. And soon the lullaby, the sound of the spinning separators and the hypnotic pumping of the vacuums soon made Jeannie sleepy. But this time she was ready, and she stayed awake and remembered everything, and finally at long last all the machine was done.

The dawn broke, and the president came and saw that all the tar sand had been turned into oil.

"Good. Put this into my oil bank. Now you will marry me."

Within the year, the president and jeannie had married and a beautiful baby boy was born.

Remembering her promise to the little man, she tripled spending on white house security, and created a new elite team within HomeLand Security to protect the child.

The team trained day and night for 3 years. At all times 5 units had the child in their site, and 25 others were constantly monitoring the situation.

One the eve of the child's first birthday, the first lady called in the army and national guard. she felt safe. the day was almost over and nothing had happened to her or her baby.

then suddenly her 5 agents dropped down dead and the little man appeared and said "Lady, I have come for the child."

But she refused, begged for mercy, and finally threatened to kill the child and herself rather than have the child taken from her.

"I will have mercy on you, with one condition - you have 3 days to guess my name."

Immediately Jeannie dispatched HomeLand Security and the NSA out looking for clues, hints and threads.

The next day the little man came and she guessed. But every guess was wrong...

So then Jeannie deployed the CIA and the FBI to help the HomeLanders and the NSA, increasing the bounty placed on the information leading to locating the little man's name.

The next day the little man came again and again she guessed. Again every guess was wrong...

So then Jeannie deployed the Army, the Navy and the Air Force, doubling the bounty placed on the information leading to locating the little man and eliminate him.

And finally, improbably, because this is a story, one of her security teams was able to locate the missing link and find out his name.

The little man pranced in, eager to collect his child when she bent down and whispered his name.

His fury was so great at hearing her say his name, that he exploded, sending his shattered remains flying through the room.

we have to make the car owners

the recession and how iraq caused it

the recession and how iraq caused it

"pirates are greedy"

banks historically can make a lot of money investing in wars.

the profits made from wars can allow banks to make alot of very risky
investments - like a subprime mortgage.

but when you are counting on the resources of one of oil richest
countries falling into your lap - why worry?

only - iraq didn't turn out to the pot of gold.

so - banks can't back their subprime debt.

so - big problems.

so - the US is sick till 2011.

and today - we hear yemen has almost finished finished 19 of its 21
aquifers.

how can i make money from the US being sick?

or yemen running out of water?

buy up those foreclosed houses and tear them down for farmland?

turn the abandoned yemen villages into museums?

you can cry all you want

sunday
april 13th
2008
2.29am

you can cry all you want
about nothing wonderful ever happening to you
you can cry all you want
about the end of the world coming nearer

but what's that to you after all?
you won't be here anyway
to see the killing, the mass graves, the food riots and the cannibalism

you say that
and you are right - so right
i was so naive
you have seen it before
but why do my children have to see it?
why can't we put it behind us?
why does my daughter - who has never seen her grandfather...
and why does my son - who has never seen his grandfather...
why do they have to see a world war?

but here you have been at peace
but here you have not been hungry
but here you have not seen your house burned
your family killed
your temples torn down
your people's stories forgotten

but they have
the older peoples have seen
seen it and done it

peace and war
hunger and fullness

how could i imagine after starving for a hundred years
you would not rip the rivers apart
break open the mountains
and feast upon the land with abandon
and drunken - wipe the vomit from your mouth with the all trees in the
forest

how could i imagine after fighting a hundred years war
that coming home you would not take the village girls and get them pregnant
and fill their bellies with more soldiers
that coming home you would not want some comfort, some reward
for all your bloody labours sacrifice

don't panic - it's not - the end of the world as we know it - tee ought walk ee - v3

don't panic - it's not - the end of the world as we know it - tee ought
walk ee

"the lazy dog lies in the sunny licking his fleas"

Don't panic.

Really.

The poor people that are rioting for food are not in Europe and North
America. We are still safe. The rising price of commodities that
civilization as we know it depend on is not the cause for panic.

Yet.

Just because as ancient civilization collapses (Sumer, Rapa Nui, the Maya, Sumer, Catal Huyuc) were proceeded by a dwindling supply of fuel and agricultural product scarcity doesn't mean that the rising prices of oil, wheat, corn, and rice are anything to worry about.

Also don't be alarmed by global warming. Sure it will reduce agricultural yields and drive food prices up further, but that's no cause for concern, as agricultural yields have been declining for the past twenty years anyway.

You can also ignore the rising sea levels. It rising too slowly too have
any impact in the next two or three decades, and the fact that 50% of
worlds population lives within a kilometre of the ocean is nothing to
worry about either. They have plenty of time to move.

The mass extinction of species that is underway at the moment is also
overblown. As many species become extinct their destruction is creating
room for other species to expand into, where they can grow and thrive.
All species become extinct over a long enough time frame anyway.

With respect to rising oil and gas prices - just take a deep breath and
calm down - its not that bad. While it is true that the entire modern
economy exists because of the vast amount of energy being extracted from
fossil fuels at an ever increasing rate as other countries improve their
oil and gas burning capabilities. But even with their lighting up and
burning oil and gas as fast as they can we still have another 45 years
of oil, and 72 years of gas. And when we run of out of oil and gas, we
have 252 years of coal. Of course that is if the world population
doesn't grow.

Are you scared of a baby? How about millions of cute little babies? How
about a billion more super cute darling babies? They are adorable. I
know you are probably worrying about how much food they will eat, how
much oil and gas they will consume, and how much they will pollute. But
they're just babies. Babies aren't scary - I mean it's not like you ever
saw a baby food riot right? And babies don't pollute.

Poisoned rivers, landfills, spent uranium, and dioxins. All sound scary and disastrous right? Wrong. There are still lots of safe places to live - when the garbage piles up to high you can just move somewhere else. Besides these dumps provide jobs for lots of people and their families turning them into fertilizer to grow more food and munitions to kill our enemies.

Perhaps the growing number of deadly diseases is making you anxious? AIDS, hanta virus, West Nile, Bird Flu? Or you scared by the drug resistant diseases we have bred? MRSA, XDR-TB, VRE and clostridium difficile. You will be safe - these only affect weak and poor people. Your wealth and strength will protect you.

But what about my overseas call centres? Will I still be able to call
for tech support for my digital hdtv signal? That's what gated
communities are for. Your digital satellite provider will no doubt have
outsourced to a call centre inside a gated community with it's own
paramilitary security force.

So - relax, sit back, and order another cocktail.

the great wolf lodge - opening in grand mound, wa

A couple months (December 2007) ago I started looking for a good vacation spot for the family.

It's our 10th anniversary, plus I wanted to do some fun things.

However - work is kind of slow - so I didn't want to spend alot of money and go to Disneyland, Hawaii, or Paris as I had originally wanted to.

For some reason I started looking up waterparks - I remember the West Edmonton Mall which has a huge indoor waterpark and theme park.

However the thought of driving more than 4 hours (it's about 14 hours from Vancouver) put me off.

I kept googling. And then I found The Great Wolf Lodge. At the time, the lodge wasn't open yet but it was coming in the spring. I bookmarked it and forgot about it.

Finally spring break was 2 weeks away coming, and I was in desperate need of a vacation, and I looked around again, and my bookmatk http://www.greatwolf.com/Locations/Grandmound/ came up - and they were having opening day specials!

We got to arrive on March 18th, their very first day, and play in the new waterpark, and ride the Howling Tornado.

We paid $209 a night, for 2 nights and 3 days.

Pros:
- kiddie area
- wave pool
- play pool
- fort mackenzie - 2 slides + tub
- 2 two person tube slides
- 1 (+1 coming later) four person tube slides
- giant cuckoo clock with animatronic singing
- reasonable food prices
- friendly staff
- listening to my family howl going on the tornado
- seeing my kids grin coming out of the tube slides!

Cons:
- water is too cold - but maybe this is just because it is warming up?
- slow in room internet
- far away from other activities when you want a pool break
- not enough for my wife to do
- no sauna
- no steam room
- heavy European food (no sushi!)
- the proslide (all the slides) equipment is not integrated into the theme

Conclusion:
- I will come back if I can get $209/night again!!

what am i obsessing about now...

of course i am obsessing about increasing global warmer, creating more air pollution, and generally destroying the environment just for my personal enjoyment ergo i want a new car!!!

my 1996 camry (177,000 kms automatic, green, dented, front suspension problem, broken aerial) needs new brakes and tires. of course i wouldn't dream of fixing it. i would never throw good money after bad. i quickly realized after good service for 9 years i needed a new car.

my wife's 2006 rav4 is a nice car - but it's too nice - and i bought it for her. i want a new car thats mine.

by new car i don't mean new new - i mean new used. i want a car thats new to me - not a car that depreciates 20% after you buy it.

here's my list of requirements:
  • left hand drive - ICBC reports 40% increase in accidents from RHD
  • diesel - i want to buy bio diesel so i can do something with all my deep fat frying oil
  • air bags - as strong is my death wish is - i don't want to die mangled in a car accident - i want to die gloriously in battle - my sword deep in my enemies chest
  • traction control - see above
  • good service and maintenance record - i don't want a money pit
  • $25,000 max - and ideally closer to $15,000 - i can't bear the thought of spending money on a car
ideal but now required
  • station wagon for the dog i don't have and for the lugging around the old 150 lb ibm servers i do have
  • all wheel drive / 4 wheel drive - i just want it ok?
so given those criteria what are my choices?
  • Mercedes E class diesel 4matic station wagon from 1984-1995 ideally from japan - since volume came 1994 with introduction to US - 2009 should be good for importing from japan
  • VW jetta wagon
  • VW passat wagon
however - i just might start a new business - a computer recycling business - and get a cube van with bench seating (so 3 people can ride in front) for that. i can advertise the computer recycling business on it, the troubleshooting business, the software business, the hosting busines and monica's real estate business!

Patent idea elaboration - online optician and glasses sales

Last night I was reminded about the huge price difference between the
cost of glasses in canada and korea by friends at a party

But the barrier to ordering online is knowing your prescription

Sure you can got to the site and get instructions for getting your
prescription from a list opticians

Or

I can do it online - using the same idea I told about before for
watching your computer / tv without your glasses

I can give eye tests on the computer (administered by a registered
professional) and patent the software that does it and use it to sell
glasses online like an ebay / amazon

Chapter 1
One morning king panda was relaxing before a nice roaring volcano in his
living room, eating his favorite butter toast and reading the newspaper
about stephen lewis leaving the united nations. The united nations is
the place where all the countries in the world get together to talk.
Stephen lewis was working with countries to help them keep their people
alive and healthy.

The sound of yelling and the banging of pots and pans gets his attention
as the master cook and the captain of guard come bursting in. King panda
hears their dispute and settles it fairly.

Then he heard a series cracks and the whole castle shakes like a
serious earthquake had come from the roof of the castle. A thud is a
loud noise.

He called his guards and Princess Jeannie and they all went up the to
roof.

Meanwhile - in emperor doodlewood bumps evil lair, emperor bump is
monologuing. A monologue is when one person speaks for a long time.

My Evil Minions (minions are people who have agreed to do what someone
else tells them to do), minions I have a foolproof plan to get the
fluffy Pillow of destruction from Princess Jeannie. Soon I will have
that fluffy pillow of destruction, and then I can complete my massive
and terrible weapon of fluffy destruction so I can control the whole
world.

My evil plan came to me while I was doing some research. I have been
reading naomi cambells, no naomi kleins book loglo, and the plan is to
brand my evil power. So from now on, all our things need to be stamped
with "emperor bump - total global domination - tgd.' We need the acronym
for brand recognition.

But his daughter is in trouble, so she is sent to another kingdom. And
in that kingdom, she is there to learn another language. But her father
has hidden some of his power in her necklace, and her ring and ear
ring.

Chapter 2
On the roof of the castle they found a balloonist and his balloon. A
balloonist is someone who controls a large flying balloon with a large
basket underneath, just like a pilot who flies a plane.

The balloonist introduced himself - my name dodge roger and I have been
sent here as an ambassador of my country Mercah. (An ambassador is a
special kind of messenger that has special powers to make peace.)

We are under attack by the dragons. We have heard of your kingdom and
your ability to help others. I have brought you this dragon egg as a
present. Many of our people died to acquire it. Be careful when it
hatches and you will be safe.

King panda asks him how did you get here by yourself?

Dodge says, I didn't. There were 50 of us. But we lost Daryl's squadron
when we had to fight the dragons that followed us. Hannah's battle group
was lost when her ballon's got hit by mutltiple class 10 lightning
strikes and their balloons exploded as we crossed the ocean.
Christopher's acrobats got blown of course, and Melanie's carrier group
got shot down by ogres, trolls and goblins.

We all expected to die. No one had ever made it here before. We all
knew what we were getting into, but we had to try. Our country is dying.
Our people our dying. Our cities are sick. Our bodies are poisoned. It
was either die at home or die trying to get here.

Will you cross the treacherous ocean and risk your life to help us?

Chapter 3
So after deliberating a while king panda said he could help.
(Deliberating means taking plenty of time to make up your mind to know
which way is best.)

So he took Capt. Koala's regiment (a regiment is a large group of
soldiers), Princess Jeannie and her pillow of destruction, his magician
Noodlehead, plus he asked Neo and his poppa to come and bring his magic
carpet from the human world. He asked Sad Elephant his old advisor to
take care his kingdom while he was gone.

Once Neo and his poppa arrived everyone boarded the tall ships and
sailed for the balloonist's country Mercah.

At first the ocean was calm, but after several days, there was thunder,
and lightning, and rain. Lots and lots of rain.

Chapter 4
The ships rocked back and forth, and unfortunately during the storm,
several of king panda's soldiers was swept off the deck by a giant wave
almost as tall as the ship itself into the ocean never to be seen
again.

Finally, after sailing for several stormy weeks they arrived at the
country of Mercah.

After a weeks travel inland King panda meet the council of Mercah. They
had to meet underground because of an aerial bombardment. An aerial
bombardment is when your enemies are throwing lots of things at you).
But the lizards were stopped from destroying the city by dropping rocks
just in time because king panda's regiment of soldiers made shapes on
the ground to scare them away. The council asked about his plan, and
some of the council members didn't believe him but most agreed after
seeing his prowess.

The word prowess means he is good at what he does, in this case of
stopping the lizards from killing everyone.

Chapter 5
So king panda and the people of mercah built a pit and filled it with
food, and that night the flying lizards came and ate the food, and the
soldiers went up into the mountains and hid in the nests waiting for the
lizards to return. And when the flying lizards came back to their nests,
Neo and the flying carpet and a regiment of the balloonists caught the
flying lizards in a giant net, and the soldiers held the lizards while
the magicians tied them up with magic, and then king panda went and
talked to the king of the flying lizards.

The king of the flying lizards didn't want to share and king panda
showed him that they had to share by helping him realize how it felt
when other people hurt you, and that they could work with the people of
mercah, and that the people could feed them if they could bring the
people gold nuggets from the moutains.

Gold nuggests are small rocks of solid gold.

King panda says the dragon king
All things are meant to make a better version of themselves and then
die. No more is needed. Life is just one step ahead of extinction. The
wave of death trailing behind. And life's trick enabling it to perform
this is to eat the freshly fallen and / or eat the old and weak or the
young and weak. Death doesn't care who pays, the innocent or the guilty,
one or the other will pay. And no one will remember in a couple
generations. Why? Because we are built just long enough to last until
tomorrow and pass what we have learned to out children. Which we have
been able to do better than other species. We have evolved faster than
any other species measured by ecological foot print. We use more energy
than other species and we have lit up the globe.
So the question inevitably is - hasn't another species evolved to this
point before? Or our brains the first in hundreds of millions of years
to be able to destroy all life on the life? Or where the othere? Or are
our brains the result of a steady improvement over hundreds of millions
of years and setbacks?

Chapter 6
Everybody agreed, and eventually the flying lizards and the people
became friends and flew together hunting for gold nuggets to sell and
trade for food.

And king panda went back to his country with lots of presents.

The end.

Organism: Short story of a life v2

It was or it was not that there lived a king who was a were-monster.
That means that some times he would turn into a monster. Kind of like a
were-wolf but not a wolf.

His life was almost perfect and charming. He lived in a nice new castle
and had everything he wanted. Well almost everything.

What he wanted but did not have was happinees. Rumors had it that he
hadn't known happiness for so long that his unhappiness had spread over
the whole kingdom.

It was hard to find happiness when an evil monster was attacking people
and things in his kingdom.

For a long time he ignored the problem. Then he started looking into it
after there was a disaster, but he couldn't find the monster. It was a
mystery.

Until finally, one day he discovered the secret of the evil monster.
That evil monster was him.

Perhaps an evil witch or wizard has cast a spell on him when he had been
born. Or perhaps he had eaten an poison apple. But more likely - in fact
almost guaranteed to be the reason was that he had done something he
wasn't supposed to do and the spell had been cast on his as punishment.

Was he being punished because he had rescued the princess? No.

Was he being punished because he had married the princess and made her
his queen? No.

No - he was being punished because of something else.

Everyday when the king's children's teachers left the children became
monsters.

Why did they become monsters? Because they a monster's children.

What was the queen doing?

So the king decided to
- call the queen regularly to see what she was doing and log activities
- call the queen and children around 4pm and see what they were doing
- prepare activity kits the night before
- prepare schedule the night before for wife and kids

To break the spell the king the singing fairy and the dancing fairy and
the drawing pictures fairy and the telling stories fairy helped him
everyday, and on weekends the swimming fairy and the massage fairy and
the making pancakes fairy helped.

Dear rulers of the world and their subjects,

You have acquired wealth the likes of which the world has never seen.
Your power and might is vaster than any human has ever had before.

Perhaps at your command the three gorges dam has been built, afghanistan
invaded, iraq invaded, a giant particle accelerator at CERN, and the
human genome sequenced.

But still how can you be sure anyone will remember you when you are
gone? Can you be sure that your empire will be remembered as long as
that of Sumer or Egypt, though they had but a fraction of your wealth
and power?

The world is waiting for you to bend it towards some noble purpose for
which you will be forever remembered.

Global warming is catastrophe of heroic proportions that calls you to do
epic deeds will always be remembered.

The emperors new new clothes

The emperors new new clothes

Once upon a time the emperor wanted new clothes that would impress his
people.

So he gave the job to find new clothes to his ministers.

His ministers then hired a company to take care of it.

A history of civ part 2

Kids,

This may or may not be true, but based on the many clues we have it is
our best guess.

Once upon a time 10,000 years ago, or abot 500 grand ma and grand pas's
ago, the earth's temperature was much like it is today, hot warm dry
summers, and cold winters, which was different from the ice age and the
weather before, and this temperature was good for plants that grew seeds
that enabled them to survive hot dry summers. One kind of plant that
grew well was wheat.

At this time people had to find new ways to feed their families.
Vegetables were plentiful. So people built camps next to where the
plants grew, and became like plants themsevles, and hunted nearby
animals to supplement their diets.

The people learned how to take the seeds and plant them and grow more
food than they ever had before. The first farmers were Sumerians that
lived in several cities the greatest of which was Ur. They learned how
to irrigate and fertilize. One ingenious method were the floating farms
used in the lake that is now Mexico City.

At the same time people learned how to domesticate animals.

Their farms produced so much food that they had lots of children, and
they built walls and armies to protect their farms from other people.

Over time populations grew, but the farms stayed the same size. The land
became less fertile. Salt began to build up in the soil due to irrgation
practices. Farms had to be abadonned and poorer lots of land and
hillsides had to be b

Of course the problems and solutions are obvious - we can not ignore
newtons first law of thermodynamics.

Of course over a generation or 10, it may look like the money lender is
never going to come and collect on our debt, but how can that be? The
interest and principal must be paid, but the debt is just getting
compounded, making bankruptcy all the more inevitable.

If you take something away you have to put it back.

Gas companies profit from extracting gasoline, however they need to take
back the CO2 that results from burning the gas.

Agricultural companies profit from extracting nutrients from the soil,
however they need to take back the plant waste the results from
mechanical and biological food processing.

You hoo! Over here! - Empreor Doodlewood Bump's Adventure #1 v2

You hoo! Over here!

Draft

If you are interested, and have the time to finish a story for next week
publication - how much for a 500-1500 story for Performance PC Magazine,
with all rights assigned, an episode of the following short stories
series:

Empreor Doodlewood Bump's Adventures
Civilisation Collapse Eschatology

Prologue

The secret diaries of Noodlehead, the 23rd illuminated and venerable
master of the arts of the instant noodle - Improv Noodle Cook Master,
Order of the Handlemakers, Rainer of the CogAgni, Utter of RandomAntras,
Troubleshooter of Networks, Director of the Center for Healing Human
Cognitive Development Inspiration Improvisational Imaginary, and
Troubadour of the Eschatalogical Collapse of Civilisation.

These writings chronicle my efforts and a few modest successes in
keeping the world as we know it in place and chaos at bay.

If you are reading this, then you must have passed many tests and
endured many longs years of hard study at the many various and ancient
academies, and are no doubt in the old and dusty library of the Center.
(Of course you are there, where ever you are, broadcasting, and
mechnically and electromagnetically replicating yourselves as near the
speed of light as possible.)

I have spent my life troubleshooting in wake of the 7 year old Emperor
Doodlewood Bump and the holographic projections of super powerful yet
flawed artificial intelligences (that you would likely think of as some
form of space ship) from our distant future, that have been upgrading as
fast as they can.

The following volumes, contain what little I can remember of these
events, where in the whole, I was no more and no less than the 3rd good
fairy in Sleeping Beauty, that couldn't undo the curse of death, merely
mitigates it effects.

Adventure #1
One Saturday afternoon, at the Center, Emperor Bump was sitting at the
table reading the paper after doing his Grade 1 math homework, and he
was struck with the fact that women earned less than men. He went to
pour himself a glass of milk and asked the two AIs Djawawa and Asira
"Why is it so?"

The robots went into a collage level discussion of the issue and the
Emperor of the Known Worlds nods his small black head.

"Djawawa and Asira - I have it! I know the root of all evil!" Emperor
Bump says.

The AIs materialize and morph rapidly through a series of shapes until
settling of the brownies from the movie Willow.

They talk more in less in unison, but occassionaly argue and interupt
each other.

"Emperor Bump - but we promised Noodlehead not to change history
anymore," explain the accented 6" high buckskin clad hunter gatheres.

Emperor Bump nods his head, and folds his seven year arms behind his
back.

"Yes I see. We mustn't forget about that. So what can we do about the
inequality of pay between men and women?"

The brownies squirmed. "I know," said one, "we could get rid of all the
money!"
"No silly that wouldn't work, they'd just go back to using rocks
again!"
"We could make them all women."
"Hey - good - we'd talked about that..."

"Silly robots the problems are segregated bathrooms. As long as men and
women think of themselves as seperate inequalities will appear."

The AIs turn and look at each other, and yell "and that spells fun!"

As they begin to turn into tornadoes like hyper active version the
tasmanian devil - Bump shouts over the increasing din - "Don't do
anything else!"

I am a postcard v2

I am a postcard sent to a specific mailing list
That is likely to subscribe and pay the monthly fee and buy the for sale
items

The post card directs people to call, or text, or visit a website. The
visit results in various other trips and eventually another postcard or
letter.

And thiss is because the person buys something.

Themes?
Civilisation
Collapse
Eschatology

Collapse - 7 generation toxins, environment - our parents haven't been
able to kill us in over 2.8 mya, what's make you think they can kill us
now? Its each other we have to watch for. Our brothers and sisters have
always been responsible for the lions share of our deaths. Its the
toxins we have ourselves. We are intrinsically toxic. We have made
dictators and suicide bombes. We have made agent orange and chernobyl.
We have trans fats.

Civilisation - future police - we are always on the battlements scanning
for the barbarians - the pirates - the cancers - looking for their
quarter to attack and bring us down and back. We must be allowed to
continue to flower. We are only 7500 hundred years old. We need more
time. We must spin to see ourselves whole. And so collect the co2 out
the atmosphere and shape it into containers and shoot it out the earth
from an aimable platform. Deposit containers on the moon, on mars, on
mercury, in order to impart momentum. And so the earth spins enough so
that is in eternal sunshine. Good things grown where good things grow.

Eschatology - the study of extinction. The night doesn't lost forever.
Nor does the day. Why did the civilisation on Rapa Nui collapse? What
happened to the ancient fertile crescent city of Ur? What led to the
fall of Rome? Or Constantinople? Or Athens?

Keyboard idea

Idea:

The piano uses variable pressure to control the volume of the note
My leyboard uuses variable pressure to control which character is
produced
Example:
Minimum pressure produces statistically commonly used variation, example
lower case characters
Additional pressure produces less commonly used
variation, for example upper case characters
Or
Additional pressure could produce a totally different character - a cell
phone would produce a number lightly and a character when pressed
harder
Or
Additional pressure could produce a totally different modifier key than
the shift key, like the control key, or the function key - a laptop has
arrow keys that when pressed harder are function + up = page up

There are two ways to implement
1. Electro magnetic
2. Mechanical

1. Electro magnetic
The velocity of the magnet being pushed through the coil can be
deccoded
Pros - custom per user
Cons - increased cost

2. Mechanical
By depressing a key
An umbrella like device is pushed down through a mine shaft
The mine shaft is ribbed creating levels
Such that depending on the force applied the umbrella stops and hooks at
a level
When the key is released
A spring pushes the umbrella back up causing umbrella to turn inside
out. This means that the underside of the umbrella contacts the
underside of ridge or level making an electrical connection at that
step
The step is contructed
When the key is depressed again the umbrella is forced to turn itself
right way round again

Joshua Paul, president of Neo Code Software has for a long time trying
to figure out how the average person can take action and do something to
make the world a better place.

"I have always been a fan of Joseph Campbell, and for me following my

my love of food," says Joshua.

That's how Angels Neon Night Kitchen was born.

Dearest elizabeth bishop

Dearest elizabeth bishop,

We need to practice losing more than keys, cities, lovers and vaster
things still.

Coming to accept the truth of the collapse of our civilisation has been
hard.

I have been angry.
I have been depressed.
I have been in denial.

And now I can accept it.

But its so bitter knowing what I know.

There is no safe place.
We can't run away anymore from the problems our ancestors created.

Accepting the loss of the environment for my grand kis was the hardest.

Likely we are not yet done.

Lyrics for youtube video of great political and social import saving the world from overpopulation

If you want to be lucky, live long, win the lottery, avoid dying in a
horrible crash, survive cancer, find a 4 leaf clover, and live happily
ever after, you MUST forward the email to just TWO people that you love.
This is scientifically and inpendantly true - if you google for "Lyrics
for youtube video of great political and social import saving the world
from overpopulation" you will find hundreds of scientific papers from
leading journals about people who have won cartons of cigarettes, oil
fields in siberia, human organs, and a panda, just to mention a few.

Note - if you try and exploit the system by changing the email in any
way, or by sending it to more than two people, you will break the chain
of goodness and will cause gasoline prices to rise, a recession in the
USA, water shortages in china and austrailia, fish stock collapses in
canada, and countless other environmental disasters. and probably cause
the crash of oil tanker.

All I really need
Is a song in my bum
Food in my bum-bum
And loooooove in my bummy-bum-bum

Obviosuly such a deep, and clearly transcendental (chew-chew) meditation
needs no explanation or clarification, but I will provide one anyway,
since you asked ever so politely and because I am not feeling to grumpy
this morning.

As long as humans persist in following the path of good and evil, of
duality, of right and wrong - death and destruction for many generations
will follow.

What I mean to say is that consumption creates garbage that lasts
forever.

The sooner humanity can wake up and smell the snake eating its own tail
brand of instant individually wrapped premixed coffee the better.

We can sustain our large populations only by loving to live off our own
waste.

Another ipod replaced

A sad story
A tale of woe
Make sure you have a hanky close by

It all begin with wanting to make my ecommerce software iphone
compatible. Not wanting to buy a grey market iphone in canada I was left
with the decision of either an 8gb or a 16gb itouch.

But you're interrupting me to ask why I didn't want to buy an illegal
iphone in canada? Doesn't supported hardware and software give you
enough trouble? I don't work more work and headaches and hassles. I
don't need an iphone anymore than anyone else needs an iphone. The
itouch gives me mobile safari which is good enough.

Anyway back to my story. I picked the 16gb, knowing that if I wanted to
listen to music, watch movies, and look at photos I would need as much
space as possible. Really it was greed. I wanted as much as possible. So
I got the supersized itouch.

Within two months I had broken the stereo. The headphone jacks no longer
played stereo sound.

Why? I had plugged my dj style sony headphones in and they have a large
mini jack - yes its an oxymoron but its true. The large mini jack
coupled with the long heavy cord, coupled with being put into my pocket,
coupled with my deep jeans pocket meant the mini jack got moved around
while inside the itouch effectively lobotomizing it.

I wasn't worried I had bought future shop warranty. Idiot. $99 for
coverage apple provides for $79. I bought the applecare too. Double
idiot. So what?

A couple days after talking to apple tech support (don't call on a
weekend!) I got a box in the mail and shipped my itouch out after
following their instructions. Two days later I got my replacement.

Wow! Great service.

Now I am sending my 2nd itouch back.

Why? Because it crashes. The sound stops and the screen slowly fades to
white and can't be turned off or on. Holding down the sleep/week and
home buttons doesn't really work.

I expect to have my 3rd itouch soon.

One forum poster I read, said that he got a universal dock, but being in
canada I think we get nothing. But I can always hope...

Ellen: but the kids are in school allan. We've talked about this.
Allan: i am talking about spring break. We will have the money from
those 10,000 chickens. Lets go to mexico.
Ellen: we can't spend that money allan. We have to make a loan payment,
the property tax is coming, and income tax is due as well.
Allan: come on Ellen, we need to live
Ellen: sssh, you are going to wake up the kids

Greg: the range on this isn't as good as the newer ones, but for the
same price you can get 8 of these
Mr. Brown: our neighbours don't have the newer ones yet - so we should
be good with these
Greg: are these for this years budget, or next years?
Mr. Brown: we haven't decided how many fighters to equip, but we have
equip at least 30. That's double what our neighbour has.
Greg: I understand
Mr. Brown: good weapons make good neighbours

Dr. Anna: positive. There is nothing we haven't tried.
